What are brownfields and Superfund sites?

Brownfields are former or current commercial or industrial properties that are vacant or underused because of known or suspected contamination — old gas stations, dry cleaners, small manufacturing sites, abandoned warehouses. NJ has thousands of them, especially in older cities like Paterson. State cleanup programs let them be reused safely.

Superfund sites are a much smaller, much worse category — federal-priority hazardous waste sites where contamination is severe enough that EPA manages the cleanup directly. NJ has ~115 of them statewide. Being near a Superfund site matters more for long-term health and property-value concerns than for day-to-day business operations.

If your business is on or near either type of site, due diligence matters before major renovations or new construction. NJDEP can help.
